Uvlumi and Drin Gwinzii! Samuel Hearne Secondary School would like to welcome local organizations and businesses to participate in our exciting guerrilla fundraising challenge to help us revive our school library and meet our goal of $21000.
Take the 21 Challenge!
The top 21 donors to help us reach our goal of $21K within the first 21 days of April will receive special recognition as a Top 21 Challenger in our school library’s decor (portable to new school). This is an excellent opportunity to help support our local students, continue to support a positive business relationship with SHSS, or gain positive visibility within our community. In addition, your support will be acknowledged in a planned end of year celebration for our revamped library space as well in any media relations, including our 21 Challenge website.
Funding
Currently, our library is nonfunctional with no circulation. There is no librarian on staff, no computers, and very few current materials – the bulk of our collection was 20-40 years old before weeding. Your support will help us update our facility with current materials and online databases, specialized materials for our special needs students, and most importantly, to develop a special aboriginal collection with Inuvialuktun and Gwich’in language materials to promote cultural pride, historical awareness and preserve aboriginal languages. If you would like to view our order lists, please feel free to contact us.
Measuring Success
As a potential donor, we understand the importance of reporting accountability and concrete results to you. If there is an interest, we will design a teacher survey to help assess media and information literacy levels of our students with followup assessments at regular intervals. In addition to research within the school, numerous studies have demonstrated the critical role a well funded school library plays in supporting the academic performance of students and student achievement. The school library of today is not simply a repository for books, but a media/information center supporting student directed learning and skills essential for navigating today’s media rich, information age. Visit our resource page for links and a bibliography of peer reviewed, academic studies that prove school libraries work!
By reviving our library, we hope to give our youth the knowledge and skill sets they will need to become successful community leaders of tomorrow and the future stewards of Inuvik’s development. If you have any further questions, concerns or comments about this project, please contact us @ 1-867-777-7387 or email us @ shssinuvik AT gmail DOT com
Thank you for considering our proposal. We look forward to hearing from you!
