Good news to report from yesterday night’s board meeting – the IDEA has joined The 21 Challenge and staffing the library is now under discussion.
Community members have expressed concerns about the current state of the library and we would like to note that cutting library funding is a nation wide trend, and in no way particular to SHSS or even the Beaufort-Delta region. Having the DEA on board is a major step towards reversing this negative trend, and it will take time to get back on track, so let’s keep this campaign positive and focus on the slow but steady revival of the school library!
In other news, we’ve been on Northwinds again and there’s an article about the library in this week’s edition of News/North.
We were on CBC North today, speaking about the library project and hopefully we’ll soon have a donor to ship those books up from Yellowknife from Squatterz! Will keep this space updated.
Also, a story on the library recently ran in the Inuvik Drum which was then picked up by the territorial paper, News North. To clarify, the book drive and The 21 Challenge are separate efforts – don’t worry, it won’t take 21K to ship books from Squatterz in Yellowknife! We need the 21K to buy very specialized and educational materials to cover school curriculum, special needs/struggling readers, and aboriginal culture, language and social issues; not the type of thing you’ll usually find in a public bookstore!
