NOTICE FOR STUDENTS: If you need a chaperone for the Jr Prom Dance on June 13/08, come to the library to help sort our collection after school! We had a surprizingly large turnout last Friday and got a lot of work done – but there’s still more work to do and only two weeks until the dance!

Also, there has been some confusion regarding the books that have come in. These are not the “new” books, but materials from the awesome book drive donation from Yellowknife. Some of “new” books have already been ordered, while we need to work out quotes (and deals) for the rest. Students might be interested in some of the following titles we do have now:

- Naomi Klein’s No Logo
- Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth
- Heuer and Allison’s Being Caribou
- tons of books about the north and the goldrush
- Johnny Cash biographies and bios of other musicians

We also have some interesting titles now on display at the circulation desk, “Climate Change” and “Youth Voices from the Middle East”

Wonderful news: the books from Yellowknife have arrived! 23 boxes of books that Daron Letts painstakingly double-checked with us to make sure they were suitable for a school library. We would like to publicly thank everyone who made a donation to this major effort be it through a financial donation, newly purchased or used books, or in their own time and labour to help prepare materials for shipping, and last but not least, shipping sponsorship. You have all been friends to the Samuel Hearne library! I’ll let our students’ smiles speak for themselves:

Some exciting new materials that this shipment included:
- reference books for art and science
- new box sets of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings
- recent back issues of National Geographic
- Canadian fiction
- SF classics from Phillip K Dick and William Gibson
- YA fiction including donations from local author Jamie Bastedo
- climate change materials like An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore
and much more!

We’d like to thank the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Schlumberger for their financial support! We are still considering how the RCMP can help the SHSS library for the Adopt-A-Library program, stay tuned to the rss.

Right now, we are in the midst of placing significant orders from a few educational publishers to restock our empty shelves. Quyannaini and mashi choo!

This is a new sub-committee dedicated to helping meet programming needs for Inuvik youth and students are welcome to join. Organizations involved include SHSS and the Inuvik Youth Center, to name a couple. Students are highly encouraged to become involved! If you’re a student and you have questions/comments, please speak with Mr. Guy or with a representative of your Student Leadership Council.

Get caught up with the original post.

We recently held a meeting to discuss the logistics of running a memorial for Kendra with the Student Leadership Council and it was decided that, due to the recent run of numerous fundraising events, it would be better to host such an event in the beginning of the Sept 08 school year.

Currently, we are looking for more students to help create letters with the shop class. Interested students should email shssinuvik AT gmail DOT com or speak with their teacher.

We received a wonderful donation today from the Aboriginal Healing Foundation! Some new materials include:

Where are the Children – an exhibition from the National Archives of Canada that examines and criticizes the documentation and photographs of residential school children.
From Truth to Reconciliation – this text offers articles by different aboriginals promoting paths to reconcillation in regards to the residential schools.
Reclaiming Connections: Understanding Residential School Trauma Among Aboriginal People - an accessible resource manual with a good bibliography

We also have received a DVD of the documentary Muffins for Granny. Check out the trailer below:

In other good news, we are slowly compiling our first major purchase orders from educational publishers, Scholastic and Saunders!
